Controlling a drone

Types of Drones Explained

Before making a purchase, it's important to understand the different categories of drones available for beginners:

  • Toy Drones: Inexpensive, small, and highly durable. Ideal for indoor use and for learning basic controls without fear of costly crashes.
  • Camera Drones: Equipped with built-in cameras. Beginner models usually feature 1080p or basic 4K cameras with electronic stabilization.
  • FPV (First Person View) Drones: Flown using goggles. While typically for advanced users, there are beginner kits available for those interested in drone racing.

Key Features to Look For

When selecting a beginner drone, prioritize features that make flying easier and safer:

  • Altitude Hold: Allows the drone to hover in place automatically, taking the pressure off managing the throttle constantly.
  • Headless Mode: Makes the drone move relative to your position, regardless of which way the front of the drone is facing.
  • Propeller Guards: Essential for indoor flying and avoiding damage during minor collisions.
  • Return to Home (RTH): If the drone loses signal or battery gets low, it automatically flies back to its takeoff point.

Safety & Legal Tips

Flying safely is your top priority. Make sure to abide by local aviation laws:

  • Register your drone if it weighs over 250 grams (in many jurisdictions).
  • Always maintain a visual line of sight with your drone.
  • Do not fly near airports, crowds, or over stadiums.
  • Respect privacy and avoid flying over private property without permission.
